 Step by Step Getting Driving License in Canada 

1. Look for the Driving Test centers near you. Mostly It will be in your city or in nearby city. You can also google Driving test or Ministry of Transportation and select the state official website for driving test. e.g. below is for Ontario Province.

Once you visit website , click on "Find a Drivetest center"

2. Before visiting Drive Test center, prepare for G1 driving test, which includes 20 questions on Traffic Signs and 20 questions on Rules of the Road. You need to get 16 answers correct to pass for each exam.

3. Carry following document 

a. Passport

b. Address proof ( Online bill will work)

c. Driving Extract physical copy

d. Foreign country driving license. 

4. When you visit driving test exam 

At entrance generate token slip , select as walk in and remaining options as foreign license holder.

When you visit kiosk , Driving test center employee will ask you to produce documents, show above documents. He will give you one form to fill up details and sign.

a. Your Eye Test will be conducted which includes identifying letters (A to Z) in rows.

LED will blink on and around your head, have to tell if its blinking left top or right

b. If documents are good then you will have to pay about $160 for G1 test and one road test(G2/G)

c. You will be directed towards exam room and which computer to sit.

5. On computer, you will have to select DOB for attempting exam for verification and exam will start after Demo. There is no time limit.

First it will be "Rules of the Road" exam. Its nothing different from handbook but there will 5-6 questions tricky so skip the question and move on to next. While studying concentrate on what is allowed and not allowed for G1 driving license. 

Second it will be "Traffic Signs", much easy so you should able to pass.

6. Once cleared the exam , you will see the desk employee who will give you temporary license. 

If you fail then you can re-attempt immediately by paying $16. 

7. If you have Active foreign driving license then you should talk with center employee for adding that experience to your G1 license and see if you are eligible immediately for G2 or G on road test. 

You will have to produce Driving Extract or Experience history letter from your origin country.

Driving extract of foreign remains valid for 6 months. You can drive up to 90 days in Canada using foreign IDP if you have enough driving experience. 

Tip: Make sure your foreign driving license at-least has 1+ years since you got it. Renewed driving license or less than a year usually don't get counted for experience. 

To reduce 1 year of wait for attempting G2 driving test, you can opt for "Beginner Driver Education Program", it will reduce wait by 4 months.
